Jamael Dean is a jazz pianist and producer whose collaborators include Kamasi Washington, Thundercat, and Carlos Niño — and on Oriki Duuru, released via Stones Throw Records, he steps fully into the spotlight with a solo performance that is as intimate as it is accomplished. Recorded live on May 4th, 2024, at 2220 Arts + Archives in Los Angeles, this album captures an unplanned, unedited hour of improvisation at the grand piano — Dean had no setlist, no plan, just his instincts and years of deep musical fluency.

Oriki Duuru — meaning "Piano Poems" in Yoruba — is a seamless journey through original compositions, free improvisations, and Dean's personal reconstructions of jazz standards, all flowing together as a single unfolding statement. The result is a rare document of spontaneous creativity, where the boundaries between composition and improvisation dissolve entirely, revealing an artist fully in command of his voice and deeply connected to the jazz tradition.
